15 Web Alternatives to Popular Desktop Software

Web applications have come a long way. They used to be amateur imitations of their desktop counterparts, with only one or two functions and not at all practical. But my, have these web apps grown. Web apps these days have become so powerful and useful that in some cases, they’ve begun to replace desktop software.
Desktop programs are great and all, but they don’t provide the same benefits as web apps that make use of cloud computing. With most web apps, you only need a browser and an internet connection to access all your data online. That beats having to install annoying programs any day. To give you a better sense of how useful web apps have become, I’ve compiled a list of web tools and apps that can very well replace some desktop programs. I hope you take the time to try them all out. You’ll be surprised how well they work.
Without further ado, here are some great web alternatives to the popular desktop programs we all love.

Forty-two such add-ons are available till date. Some of the best ones are QR Share, Adblock Plus, Tab History, Bookmarks, Wikipedia Search and so on. Opera mobile browser:

Opera since last few years has become very popular amongst mobile users and making a good space in the Android devices. According to a recent study, there are roughly 100 million mobile users who use the Opera Mini 6 on a monthly basis. There are two versions available: Opera Mobile Browser, aimed at higher-end devices, and Opera Mini, which is aimed at older and lower spec devices. one of their best desktop features over to the Android version, and that feature is Opera Turbo.
This optional feature uses external servers and routing to compress data before it’s sent to your device, much in the way Amazon’s Silk browser operates. As a result, you end up with less data being broadcast to your device, so pages load faster and your mobile data plan will last you longer. If you use Opera on Desktop, then do use it on your Android as well.

It is really extraordinary side from Google since they brought their cross-platform desktop browser to Android Platform.  It supports almost all our favorite chrome elements like Incognito browsing, Auto-fill, and omnibox, etc.
Chrome doesn’t have a toggle for requesting desktop sites and does not have Flash integration either.

Nokia Pureview 808 with 41-Megapixel Camera

Nokia N8 is widely accepted as the best camera phone with its 12-megapixel Carl Zeiss lens. Now Nokia has changed its flagship model by introducing Nokia 808 Pureview at MWC 2012, a smartphone with a whopping 41-megapixel camera system.

Pureview can capture photos at a resolution of 7728x5354 pixels in 16:9 format or 7152x5368 pixels in 4:3 format.

Nokia recommends 5-megapixels as the resolution to capture complete noiseless pictures. The camera uses the concept of oversampling to combine up to 7 pixels into one single pixel. As a result, a perfect picture is formed. By zooming the picture up to 3 times, there is no loss in quality or details.

The maximum possible resolution is 38 megapixels with Creative Shooting mode. Nokia 808 Pureview records 1080p videos with 4X lossless zoom at 30 fps. Crisp clear audio recording takes place even at high level of 140 db.

Nokia Pureview has surprised us with its camera system but it is not amazing as other specs draw a yawn. The phone has 4-inch ClearBlack AMOLED screen with a resolution of 360x640 pixels. It has 1.3 GHz processor (single-core) and 512 MB of RAM. Pureview has 16 GB of internal storage memory which can further be extended with microSD card support.

The screen resolution is too low to view the amount of detail captured by the phone camera. Also, these days, dual-core phones are common even as quad-core phones are making their way into the market. In such a situation, single core processor is not of much consideration.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview Hits 1 Million Downloads

Microsoft's Windows 8 Consumer Preview saw more than one million downloads during the first day of its release, the Building Windows 8 team said via Twitter late Thursday. The beta version of Windows 8 posted on Wednesday morning; it's not clear whether the first million downloads occurred within or just beyond the first 24 hours of availability. Microsoft recorded three million downloads of the Windows 8 Developer Preview between September and December, 2011.

The latest version of Windows is a dramatic departure from previous versions of Microsoft's trademark OS. Most notably, the decades old PC desktop has been kicked from its perch as the main Windows interface in favor of a touch-centric Start screen that echoes Windows Phone 7. "Windows 8 reimagines Windows, from the chipset to the experience," said Steven Sinofsky, president of Microsoft's Windows division.

Expectations are high that Windows 8 (also designed for ARM SoCs) will enable tablet manufacturers to mount a serious challenge to Apple's iPad, which Android tablets have so far failed to do. Whether Windows 8 will be a big winner on traditional PCs, however, is unclear. Microsoft says Windows 8 is just as easy to use with a mouse as it is with a touchscreen, but it requires users to learn a new way of navigating a Windows PC.

The start button is replaced with a hot corner that kicks you back to the new Metro-style touch-friendly Start screen. From there you can choose to open traditional desktop apps or use some of the new Metro apps such as Xbox LIVE Games, Maps, and a Metro-style Internet Explorer.

PC users will also have to be content with full-screen programs when using Metro-style apps, and must learn how to use the new Charms Bar on the far right of the Windows 8 display. The Charms Bar includes important system functions such as Settings, Search, settings for devices connected to your computer, and a new social-networking friendly Share button.
Windows 8 does offer some new features for PC desktop users, including a revamped file transfer dialog box, tools to deal with duplicate files, faster boot times, and new SkyDrive integration with Windows Explorer (not yet available in the Consumer Preview).

But the main focus for Microsoft in Windows 8 is the touch experience, while the desktop has been turned into a second-class citizen. That appears to be Microsoft's plan for the moment, anyway.  The reaction of regular PC users to Windows 8's radical departure is unclear.
Nevertheless, the large numbers of Windows 8 Consumer Preview downloads suggests, at the very least, that users are interested in checking out the newest version of Windows.

Microsoft Windows 8 Consumer Preview launched

Microsoft has made the next step forward for its next-gen operating system, releasing Windows 8 Consumer Preview for anyone to download and try for free on their PC.

It comes as two download options: an executable file that partitions your existing system and installs Windows 8 as dual-boot; and an ISO that you can burn to disc and try on a fresh computer. This follows the Windows 8 Developer Preview that we took a look at in September 2011.

This time around, Microsoft has been working hard on the user interface. One of the complaints we had when we first looked at Windows 8 was that the Metro interface was great on a touchscreen, but with a keyboard and mouse it was hard to use.

With Consumer Preview, Microsoft has added scrollbars to the bottom of display, so you can quickly slide around the home screen. A zoom-out control lets you get an eagle-eye view of everything, letting you jump to the tiles that you want quickly.

There are also four hotspots in the corners of the display. These can be used to bring up the Start menu, recent applications and a shortcut bar. It looks a lot smoother and better designed than the original Developer Preview, although we'll reserve final judgement until we've had chance to download and install the software.

iPhone 5 coming up! Almost here...

iPhone 5 will be released in September

The latest rumors say that iPhone 5 will be released this fall, in September, maybe October. The rumors multiplied after the appearance of the latest iOS’ beta versions last week. The 3rd beta version of iOS 5 has been revealed, so it becomes a fact that we are closer to the 5th iPhone generation.
Apple is again revolutionizing with the new iOS 5, with one of its new feature – “Assistive touch”. It seems that iPhones, iPads and iPods will no longer need any button with this improvement.
Assistive touch” is actually a menu that helps the user jump off the button pressing and, with just one finger tap, you can:
- rotate the screen
- lock the screen
- adjust volume
- go back to home menu
- open the multitasking bar
- simulate the shake of the device
- do custom movements and save them into different gestures for further fast utilization
- arrange the icons wherever you want on the screen.
A latest detail has to be mentioned – the brand new and free iCloud, which will come along with the new iOS5. It will have a storage capacity of 5GB (or more, if bought) and it will load / sync / share on other devices wirelessly: photos, music, documents, contacts, agenda – it goes PC-free! You will be also able to do back-ups and restores, media streaming or just use it for storage.

Browsing is again renewed with offering the possibility to read your daily newspaper or magazines just like if you were in a newspaper store. Emailing has an integrated dictionary, and – for the iPad – the keyboard splits, for an easier writing. As the iPhone5 has already reached AT&T (telecommunication service leader) for testing, it means it’s just a matter of time until we can benefit of all the wonderful innovations that Apple prepares for us!

Mango – Windows Phone 7 from Microsoft

Mango is the name of new Windows Phone 7 from Microsoft and it was released to the manufacturers for OS testing and compatibility.
It will probably be available in a few weeks in Japan first (by Fujitsu), then lately by Nokia, Samsung, LG and HTC.
Let’s sneak a bit in the phone and see – of course – what’s different? Microsoft is not bringing brand new revolutionary features on the market (at least not all of them…), but it makes them smarter and easier to access.
To start with, the home screen – it is actually the Start Screen. So you can stay up to date with everything you want to know (depending on the applications that you are interested). For example: weather, friends’ social status, emails, calls, agenda or texts.

Microsoft is launching the hub term in its Windows Phone 7. So it has:

People Hub: referring to friends, there is not just a list of contacts. Windows Phone 7 integrates a person’s Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Windows Live profiles and tells you right up to date everything that is new for each person in your list.
- Similar to this is unification of the messaging inbox, which allows the user to easily see all the text he receives, but in a smart way, divided in personal (social network messages, personal email accounts and so on) and business (Outlook)
Pictures Hub: collects your entire taken photos (which you can shot even if the phone is locked!) and even your friends’ posted photos on the social networks.
Games Hub: besides playing whatever game you desire, you can create a gamer profile and go online through Xbox live to meet other gamers. Your scores will always be remembered!
Media Hubs: music and video collections, among PC wireless synchronization.
Office Hub: because it is the only phone with Office Mobile, Windows Phone 7 is detaching you from your PC: you can reach all you need: from Word, Excel and PowerPoint to OneNote and SharePoint.
Marketplace Hub
One of the breakthroughs is the built in Bing, which helps the user with maps and search. The search actually does the work for you:
- It can scan a bar code and find any related thing you would want to know about that particular item: where does it come from, where can you find it, what does it contains, what is the price, reviews, etc.
- It can locate you and suggest to you: nearest places to visit, or nearest restaurants, shopping center, trains, locations – it is a life saver!
As a browser it uses IE9, it runs instantaneously and it is multitasking.

Last but not least, it has the smart possibility to Find Phone – if you lose your phone, you can remotely write a massage on it, locate it, lock it or erase things.
