File Structure in Linux

Most of the people who are new to Linux are confused about directories and File structure on Linux. When you boot any Linux distribution ‘root partition’ is mounted at /. Every files and folder are mounted under /. You don’t find any drive name like (C, D) etc in Linux(if it is not dual booted). Moreover In Linux, program are located in different directories. For examples less command is located under /usr/bin directory. Therefore the directory structure of Linux/Unix is intimidating especially for the users who have migrated from windows.

Difference between Linux and Windows File Structure

In windows almost all the program files are installed in ‘program file” by default unless user specify the specific directory. In Linux directory system are categories on the basis of structure of program. For example configuration files are in /etc, all binary files are in /bin or /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin and so on.

Windows file Structure

\\Folder\\subfolder\\file.txt

Linux File Structure

1
/Folder/subfolder/file.txt
The basic difference is:
Linux/Unix always use forward slash to denote filesystem hierarchy whereas windows use backslash.

Create a Flip3D Taskbar Icon in Windows 7

Flip3D was a fun and cool looking feature in Windows Vista that can be very useful for switching between windows. With the improved Windows 7 taskbar, Flip3D was replaced with improved thumbnails and Aero Peek.

This Windows trick works with Windows 7 or Windows Vista but not in XP. If your computer can run Aero (the default interface with see-through windows), you can use Flip 3D, a sort of 3D version of the [Alt] + [Tab] shortcut. With this shortcut, Windows shrinks all program windows so they all fit on the screen. You flip through them in a stack of 3D screens to find the window you want.

This article will show you how to create a Flip3D icon on the Windows 7 taskbar:

1.Right click on the Desktop and select New and then Shortcut.

2.Type in RunDll32 DwmApi #105 in the location box and click Next.

3.Type in Flip3D as the Name and click Finish.

4.You will now have an shortcut on the desktop that will launch Flip3D but it has the wrong icon. Right click on the Flip3D shortcut and select Properties.

5.On the Shortcut tab click the Change Icon button.

6.Change the Look for icons in this file text box to C:\windows\explorer.exe and it Enter.  The Flip3D icon will now be available. Select it and click OK.

7.Click OK to close out the shortcut properties window.

8.Finally, just drag and drop the new shortcut on the Windows 7 taskbar to pin it.

iPhone 5 coming up! Almost here...

iPhone 5 will be released in September

The latest rumors say that iPhone 5 will be released this fall, in September, maybe October. The rumors multiplied after the appearance of the latest iOS’ beta versions last week. The 3rd beta version of iOS 5 has been revealed, so it becomes a fact that we are closer to the 5th iPhone generation.
Apple is again revolutionizing with the new iOS 5, with one of its new feature – “Assistive touch”. It seems that iPhones, iPads and iPods will no longer need any button with this improvement.
Assistive touch” is actually a menu that helps the user jump off the button pressing and, with just one finger tap, you can:
- rotate the screen
- lock the screen
- adjust volume
- go back to home menu
- open the multitasking bar
- simulate the shake of the device
- do custom movements and save them into different gestures for further fast utilization
- arrange the icons wherever you want on the screen.
A latest detail has to be mentioned – the brand new and free iCloud, which will come along with the new iOS5. It will have a storage capacity of 5GB (or more, if bought) and it will load / sync / share on other devices wirelessly: photos, music, documents, contacts, agenda – it goes PC-free! You will be also able to do back-ups and restores, media streaming or just use it for storage.

Browsing is again renewed with offering the possibility to read your daily newspaper or magazines just like if you were in a newspaper store. Emailing has an integrated dictionary, and – for the iPad – the keyboard splits, for an easier writing. As the iPhone5 has already reached AT&T (telecommunication service leader) for testing, it means it’s just a matter of time until we can benefit of all the wonderful innovations that Apple prepares for us!

Mango – Windows Phone 7 from Microsoft

Mango is the name of new Windows Phone 7 from Microsoft and it was released to the manufacturers for OS testing and compatibility.
It will probably be available in a few weeks in Japan first (by Fujitsu), then lately by Nokia, Samsung, LG and HTC.
Let’s sneak a bit in the phone and see – of course – what’s different? Microsoft is not bringing brand new revolutionary features on the market (at least not all of them…), but it makes them smarter and easier to access.
To start with, the home screen – it is actually the Start Screen. So you can stay up to date with everything you want to know (depending on the applications that you are interested). For example: weather, friends’ social status, emails, calls, agenda or texts.

Microsoft is launching the hub term in its Windows Phone 7. So it has:

People Hub: referring to friends, there is not just a list of contacts. Windows Phone 7 integrates a person’s Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Windows Live profiles and tells you right up to date everything that is new for each person in your list.
- Similar to this is unification of the messaging inbox, which allows the user to easily see all the text he receives, but in a smart way, divided in personal (social network messages, personal email accounts and so on) and business (Outlook)
Pictures Hub: collects your entire taken photos (which you can shot even if the phone is locked!) and even your friends’ posted photos on the social networks.
Games Hub: besides playing whatever game you desire, you can create a gamer profile and go online through Xbox live to meet other gamers. Your scores will always be remembered!
Media Hubs: music and video collections, among PC wireless synchronization.
Office Hub: because it is the only phone with Office Mobile, Windows Phone 7 is detaching you from your PC: you can reach all you need: from Word, Excel and PowerPoint to OneNote and SharePoint.
Marketplace Hub
One of the breakthroughs is the built in Bing, which helps the user with maps and search. The search actually does the work for you:
- It can scan a bar code and find any related thing you would want to know about that particular item: where does it come from, where can you find it, what does it contains, what is the price, reviews, etc.
- It can locate you and suggest to you: nearest places to visit, or nearest restaurants, shopping center, trains, locations – it is a life saver!
As a browser it uses IE9, it runs instantaneously and it is multitasking.

Last but not least, it has the smart possibility to Find Phone – if you lose your phone, you can remotely write a massage on it, locate it, lock it or erase things.

How to change operator using MNP facility

In light of the Supreme Court rulling, many users would now like to change their operators. Here's how you can use MNP to shift to other operators while keeping your mobile number.

With Supreme Court cancelling 122 licenses of 10 mobile operators, there would now be uncertainties regarding the future of these operators' services.

The Supreme Court however has given four-months for these operators to continue their services. So if you want to shift to other operators without changing your number, you can opt for Mobile Number Portability or MNP.

Here's how MNP works.

Step 1:

To begin with, you need to generate UPC (Unique Porting Code) by sending SMS to 1900. UPC is an alphanumeric code allocated, upon request, by a mobile operator to its subscriber for the purpose of facilitation of porting of his/her mobile number to another operator.

You just need to SMS "PORT" to 1900. Do note that normal SMS charges will be applicable. For example, type "PORT 9XXXXXXXXX" and then sent it to 1900.

But, before applying subscriber needs to keep in mind while porting are that porting is allowed after 90 days either from the day when an existing number was activated, or from the time when it was last ported.

Step 2:

After sending SMS to 1900, you will receive UPC (Unique Porting Code) through an SMS from 1901. The SMS will have an 8 digit alpha-numeric Unique Porting Code and will have a validity of seven days.

Step 3:

You have to visit the nearest showroom/outlet of your desired operator where you need to fill up the MNP form and submit address and ID proof documents, a self-attested photo and the mobile phone bill of previous month if you are a post paid user.you will be charged a porting fee of Rs 19.

Remember that the UPC has seven days expiry date after which it will have no use. So if for some reason you cannot change your operator within that time, you have to apply again by following above mentioned procedure again.

Step 4:
Your operator will then check your application for MNP and if you do not have any dues left, it will grant approval for porting. According to TRAI's guideline, your telecom operator has to grant its approval if the dues are less than Rs 10.

Step 5:

You will then receive an SMS from your new operator on the time and date when the porting will be taking place.

Step 6:

There will be a 2 hours' no service period after the porting time that was mentioned on the SMS. After that you can change your old SIM with your new operator's SIM card. Do note that here your number will be the same.

How to save battery on Android Smartphone

Optimize your Android smartphone so that your battery lasts longer.

The Android devices we see today are a result of a long period of evolution during which the both hardware and software have improved a lot. Today, multi core processors and faster applications have become mainstream and Android with its smartphone and tablet devices is giving tough competition to personal computers as well.

The increase in computing muscle of devices and faster, more resource hungry applications available today put a load on the battery, whose performance in terms of battery backup is steadily declining. Although bigger batteries are gaining in popularity, there is a limit to which these batteries can be upgraded as there are limitations in terms of both size and weight, which directly affect the look and feel of the device as well.

There are many things that device manufacturers are doing to make devices self aware so that they optimize battery utilisation. But apart from software controlling the battery of the device which often affects performance adversely, here is how you can go about saving the battery of your Android device by other methods. By doing this you will not only enhance backup time but also check the unnecessary waste of crucial power.
So here are some tips to save battery on your Android device.

Display
The smartphone's display can use up to 60 per cent of the battery in a smartphone. Battery life can be radically improved if it is used properly.

Step 1

Reducing the display's brightness to an optimal level can help immensely in saving battery power. Also, if your phone has an ambient light sensor, tweak the setting to an optimal yet comfortable brightness level. Navigate to the display option in the settings menu and make the desired changes to suit your convenience.

Step 2

After you are done reducing the display's brightness, reduce the screen's idle time as well. Display time out refers to the time for which the display stays on after finishing a task or when it is left idle. Keeping it at between 10-15 seconds is optimal.

Wireless connectivity

Smartphones feature Bluetooth and WiFi, and most device manufacturers have these radios switched on as default for seamless connectivity, but turning these options off when they aren't being used can help improve battery life.

Step 3

Navigate to the settings menu of the Android device and locate wireless and networks. From there uncheck the desired radio option from both WiFi and Bluetooth to turn them off if you don't need them running. You can turn them on whenever you need to.

3G
High speed networks offer blistering fast speeds but at the same time consume a lot of battery as well. So when you don't need it, turn the 3G off.

Step 4

Within the wireless and networks option in your Android device select mobile networks. From the screen that follows choose the only-2G networks option whenever there is no need for 3G.

 GPS

Global positioning system is great for navigation and for geo tagging photographs as well, but it doesn't work indoors and by turning it off you will definitely prolong battery life.

Step 5

From under the settings menu of the device navigate to the location and security tab, and then uncheck the use GPS satellites option.

Task manager
With multitasking in focus, devices today keep multiple applications running in the background in a low power state. Even though they are in a low power state they require processing to consume battery life.

Step 6

Press the home icon or key on your device for long to open the recent tasks window.

From there select the task manager option. Once it is open select and kill/end all the applications you aren't using.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi or WLAN (Wireless Local Area Networks) is a wireless network based on a series of specifications from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) called 802.11. Wi-Fi uses unlicensed radio frequency, mostly in the 2.4GHz band. It enables a person with a wireless-enabled computer or PDA to connect to the Internet via a wireless access point. The geographical region covered by one or several access points is called a hot spot. Wi-Fi was intended to be used for mobile devices and local-area networks, but it is now often used for Internet access outdoors. Several cities, including Philadelphia and San Francisco, plan to install citywide Wi-Fi systems for use by all citizens in each municipality. There are several types of Wi-Fi:
  • 802.11a (offering transmission speeds of 24mbps to 54mbps)
  • 802.11b (6mbps to 11mbps) and 802.11g (24mbps to 54 mbps)
  • 802.11n (50mbps to 100mbps) is a proposed specification that will become a Wi-Fi standard once it’s finalized by the IEEE, and the Wi-Fi Alliance completes its interoperability testing.

The Cleverest Geeky Windows Tricks Everyone Should Know

Use the Secret Send To Menu Items

When you right-click on any file or folder, you can use the Send To menu to create a zipped version, or send the file to an application, but in Windows 7 there are hidden items on the Send To menu that can't be seen by default.

All you have to do is hold down the Shift key, then right-click on a file and access the Send To folder—you'll see a whole bunch of new items in the list, like special folders, and even an item for each one of your drives. It's a really useful tip for quickly sending a file to the flash drive you just plugged into the PC, without having to do anything else.

Open a Command Prompt from Any Folder

This is one of those tips that most real geeks already know, but chances are there's somebody reading this that doesn't know about it—if you hold down the Shift key while right-clicking on any folder, including the desktop background, you'll see a new item for "Open command window here", that will open a command prompt with that folder as the default path. This tip only works in Windows 7 or Vista.

Hide Secret Data Inside Any File

There's any number of great ways to hide data from prying eyes—TrueCrypt, anyone? But if you want to simply hide some text data inside a secret "compartment", you can abuse the Alternate Data Streams feature in the underlying NTFS file system. All you have to do is open up a command prompt, and then use a command similar to this:

notepad SomeFile.txt:SecretWordHere.txt

The special filename with the colon and second filename tells NTFS to actually store the data in an alternate stream, instead of the regular file. You can put whatever you want into the file, and nobody will be able to access it unless they know the command to retrieve it.

Tile or Cascade Specific Windows

Sure, Windows 7 has the awesome Aero Snap feature that lets you drag windows to the side of the screen to fill one side, but what if you want to cascade them, or tile them stacked on top of each other?

Back in the XP and Vista days this was relatively simple—you could hold down the Ctrl key while selecting multiple windows on the taskbar, and then right-click on any of them to tile or cascade them. For Windows 7, you can do the same thing, but you'll need to open up Task Manager instead, hold Ctrl, select the open windows, and then you can cascade them from there.

Undo an Accidental File Move or Deletion With the Keyboard

Have you ever tried to select a bunch of files while holding the Ctrl key, and then accidentally copied all of them because you slightly moved your mouse? Maybe you just deleted a file and don't feel like hunting it down in the Recycle bin. In either case, you can use the Ctrl+Z shortcut key to immediately reverse whatever you didn't mean to do.

Readers will probably point out that you can also do this from the context menu in Windows 7, but it's surprising how many people don't realize the keyboard shortcut works.

Keep Connected to find out new unknown Windows Tricks.

Top 5 must-have desktop Gadgets for Windows 7

1: Facebook Explorer

Facebook Explorer, can be configured to run in a smaller or larger width and one of three heights, and you can specify how often you want updates (from every one to 60 minutes). It gives you a compact view of your own status and information or friends’ activities, as shown in two views of the gadget in. You can also update your status in the flyout.

2: Clipboard Manager

Clipboard Manager  looks slick and is feature-rich. You can customize the background to fit your desktop, and not just the color; you can use a photo as the background if you prefer.
You can save up to 999 clips (that’s a lot of clips!) and you can delete any clip or send it to the Clipboard or to your Favorites list with a right click. The Favorites feature lets you create boilerplate text you use often. I also like the ability to mark clips with timestamps. And unlike the old Clipboard gadget, this one supports images as well as text. It even has a privacy mode, which prevents clips from being displayed on the main gadget so that passers-by who glance at your desktop can’t see what you’ve saved to the clipboard.

3: App Launcher

One aspect of Windows 7 that annoyed and frustrated many users was the omission of the Quick Launch toolbar. If you’re like me, for years you’ve relied on the Quick Launch bar to access your frequently used programs. There is a way to get Quick Launch back, but unlike with previous versions of Windows, you can’t separate the Quick Launch bar from the main Taskbar. That means it takes up precious space on the Taskbar that you might need for open programs, system tray items, etc.
Enter the App Launcher gadget . It serves the same purpose as the Quick Launch bar but can be placed anywhere you want on the desktop. You can add whatever programs you want by dragging them to the gadget, configure the number of icons to display per row and whether to center them, and change the background image.

4 : Shutdown Gadget

Don’t go to Start menu to shut down. You can Shutdown/Restart/Logoff in a single click by using this gadget.

5 : All CPU Meter

All CPU Meter isn’t as complex as some, but the simplicity works in its favor. It monitors your memory usage as well as CPUs, and it packs a lot of information into a small space. I also like that you can change the background color to match your preferences.

Payroll Management System

In the existing system, most of the records are maintained on paper. It becomes very inconvenient to modify the data. In the existing system, here is a possibility that the same data in different registers may have different values which means the entries of the same data do not match. This inconsistent state does not supply the concrete information which poses a problem in the case information related to particular search record.

Our project is very useful. User is no longer required to check his register in search of records, as now it can be searched over the software by choosing some options. The user need not to type in most of the information. He/she is just required to enter the desired options. On the whole it liberates the user from keeping lengthy manual records. In a nutshell, it abates the work load of an organization.

In today’s world, no one likes to perform calculations on calculator or manually when computer is there. Every one wants his/her work to be done by computer automatically and displaying the result for further manipulations.
